You'll hear this word once you're living in Portugal: desenrascanço. It usually gets translated as "resourcefulness" or "making do." Almost, but not quite. Neither of those quite captures the meaning. So, then, what does it mean and how does it relate to living here? Let's take a closer look.
What does it mean?
Desenrascanço (deh-zen-hash-KAHN-soo) comes from the verb desenrascar, which roughly means to untangle yourself from a difficult situation. The noun describes the skill itself. In other words, something goes wrong, the right tool isn't there, or the plan falls apart completely, and somehow you find a workable solution anyway.
It's not the same as being organized. In fact, it's often the opposite. Desenrascanço shows up specifically when the original plan has already failed and you have to improvise something that works, even if it's not elegant.
Why does it matter?
Many cultures have words for behaviors they notice within themselves. In Portugal, desenrascanço is generally worn as a compliment. Being good at it means you can handle tough things without panicking and find a way through.

The flip side

Genuinely impressive problem-solving skills, and a system that sometimes relies on it a little too much.
Why it's useful to know before you move here
When you move to Portugal, be ready to make peace with plans that don't always go the way you hoped. A document doesn't get accepted, an appointment runs long, instructions turn out less clear than they sounded. Knowing about desenrascanço won't fix any of that, but it reframes it. The expectation isn't that everything goes smoothly. It's that when it doesn't, you figure something out.
